Rubbish Removal Tamworth: Skip Bins vs Pick-up

In short: for a big clean-up, a skip bin is often the easier way to remove household or green waste in Tamworth. For small amounts, Tamworth Regional Council's tip, waste vouchers and booked pick-up are worth knowing about.

Your options for rubbish removal in Tamworth

In short: For a big clean-up, a skip bin is usually the simplest way to remove household or garden waste. For a load or two, council's Forest Road tip and your waste vouchers may be enough, and Waste Wagon can collect a few bulky items.

Most Tamworth households have three ways to get rid of more rubbish than fits in their bins:

  1. A skip bin, delivered to your driveway and taken away when you're done.
  2. Taking it to the tip yourself, at Tamworth Regional Council's landfill on Forest Road or another council waste facility.
  3. Waste Wagon, council's booked, user-pays bulky waste pick-up.

Which one makes sense depends on how much you have, what it is, and whether you have a trailer and the time to do the runs.

Option 1: a skip bin

In short: A skip suits jobs with a lot of mixed rubbish, heavy waste or many trailer loads of garden waste, because you load it at your own pace and it's taken away in one go.

A skip sits on your driveway (or on the street with council approval) for an agreed hire period. You can fill it over a few days, and you don't need a trailer, a ute or anyone to lift heavy items. Skips can take things Waste Wagon won't, such as bagged household rubbish, garden waste, soil, bricks and renovation waste, as long as you choose the right bin and tell the operator. They can't take asbestos, gas bottles, batteries, tyres or chemicals in a normal load. See what can go in a skip and the size guide.

For a deceased estate, a house move or a big shed or garage job, see our clean-outs guide.

Option 2: the Forest Road tip and your waste vouchers

In short: If you have a trailer and only a load or two, you can take rubbish to council's Tamworth Landfill yourself, and your waste vouchers can cover some of it.

Tamworth Regional Council's Tamworth Landfill is at 123a Forest Road. Council lists it as open 8am to 4:30pm every day, with shorter hours on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. All council waste sites close on Anzac Day, Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. You stop at the weighbridge first, then unload household rubbish and recycling at the Small Vehicle Waste Transfer Station. Council asks that loads be covered. It also runs landfills at Barraba, Manilla and Nundle and seven rural transfer stations with shorter hours.

Residential properties can get four digital waste vouchers each financial year through council's online Resident Services portal. Tenants in homes with a kerbside bin service can generally get them too. Council says each voucher covers up to 2 m³ of bulky household waste, and they can also be used for green waste, metal, e-waste and clean bricks, tiles and concrete. They can't be used for asbestos, soil, commercial waste or rubbish from a skip bin service. Vouchers expire on 30 June.

Option 3: Waste Wagon bulky pick-up

In short: Council's Waste Wagon collects up to 2 m³ of bulky household items from your verge, but you have to book, it's user-pays, and it won't take household rubbish bags or garden waste.

Tamworth Regional Council doesn't run a regular kerbside bulky waste clean-up. Instead, it offers Waste Wagon, a book-in, user-pays collection for residents who can't get bulky items to a waste facility. Each booking also uses one of your waste vouchers. Council collects from the verge on Mondays (from 28 September 2026), Wednesdays and Thursdays.

  • It takes: furniture and bedding (one mattress per collection), one small fridge, freezer or air conditioner, small appliances and e-waste, up to two tyres, and metal. Each item must be under 30 kg, liftable by two people and under 2 m long and high.
  • It won't take: bags of household rubbish, garden waste, rocks or soil, asbestos, concrete or bricks, car parts or oil, plate glass, chemicals, paint, gas bottles or commercial waste.

What about my kerbside bins?

In short: Your kerbside bins are for everyday rubbish, recycling and garden clippings, not clean-ups.

Council's bins are a red-lid garbage bin collected weekly, and a yellow-lid recycling bin and a green-lid garden organics bin collected on alternating fortnights. Which bins you get depends on where you live, and the My TRC App shows your services and bin days. The green bin takes loose leaves, grass, prunings and branches up to 1 m long and 7.5 cm across, but not food waste, timber or bagged waste.

So which is easier?

In short: Pick a skip for big, mixed or heavy jobs. Use the tip, your vouchers or Waste Wagon for small amounts of the waste they accept.

  • A skip bin usually makes sense for a full clean-out, a renovation, a big garden or shed job, heavy waste, or when you don't have a trailer or the time for several tip runs.
  • The tip suits one or two trailer loads, especially while you still have vouchers.
  • Waste Wagon suits a few bulky items that two people can lift.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to get rid of a lot of rubbish in Tamworth?

It depends on how much you have and what it is. For one or two loads, a trailer run to the Forest Road tip, using your council waste vouchers if you have them, may be enough. For a big clean-out, heavy waste or many loads, a skip bin is often the easier option, because you load it at your own pace and it's taken away in one trip.

Where is the Tamworth tip and when is it open?

Tamworth Regional Council's Tamworth Landfill is at 123a Forest Road. Council lists it as open 8am to 4:30pm every day, with shorter hours on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. It's closed on Anzac Day, Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Does Tamworth Regional Council have a kerbside bulky waste collection?

Not a regular clean-up. Council gives residential properties four waste vouchers a year for its waste facilities and offers Waste Wagon, a booked, user-pays pick-up of up to 2 m³ of bulky household items from your verge.

Can I use my Tamworth waste vouchers for a skip bin?

No. Council says vouchers can't be used for residential waste from a skip bin service. They're for taking waste to council's facilities yourself, and one is used with each Waste Wagon booking.

Will Waste Wagon take garden waste or bags of rubbish?

No. Waste Wagon doesn't take bags of household rubbish, garden waste, rocks, soil, bricks, concrete or asbestos. For those, use your bins, take them to a council facility, or hire a skip.

Can a skip bin take garden waste and building rubbish?

Usually, yes, which is one reason people choose a skip. Heavy waste such as soil, concrete and bricks normally needs a smaller bin with a weight limit, and asbestos can never go in a general skip. Tell the operator what you have when you request a quote.

Do I need a permit for a skip bin on the street in Tamworth?

A skip wholly on your own property generally doesn't need council approval. A skip on the road, footpath or nature strip needs approval from Tamworth Regional Council. See our council skip permits guide for details.
